Become a North County Coastal Tree Steward!

Plant our Future in North County’s Coastal Region! Our local trees need your help!

We need more of the right trees in the right places to benefit human and environmental health. Given climate and other environmental challenges, you can support a resilient tree canopy by becoming a Tree Steward.

Who are Tree Stewards?

  • Volunteers trained in various skills to preserve and enhance their neighborhood trees–the right trees in the right places for the right reasons, with the right maintenance.
  • Sample tree steward skills: how to plant, water, maintain, and monitor tree health; understanding the value of trees; communicating and advocating for trees in their community; understanding the best trees to plant in our climate; how to organize tree planting and tree care groups and events.
  • Contribute their skills and knowledge for 60-70 hours per year with a minimum 1-year commitment. Schedules allow for personal flexibility.
  • Serve as informal advisors for family, friends, and neighbors in need of tree-related information.

What will I be doing as a Tree Steward?

  • Start with providing new tree care because they need it in our climate, especially watering.
  • Attend a free 5-hour Tree Steward certification workshop in Basic Tree Watering and Maintenance skills in February or March 2019.
  • Care for new street trees in the Encinitas area beginning April 2019.
  • Depending on your capacity and interests, you can do one or more of the following
  • Provide on-the-spot skills training in the field to other Tree Stewards and volunteers.
  1. Supervise small groups in the field.
  2. Water trees; lift and carry water buckets a short distance, weighing either 20 or 40 lbs.
  3. Weed and maintain berms (especially appealing to younger children).
  4. Watch for pests and other damage.
  • Options for additional work locations and tasks will be added.

Who can be a Tree Steward?

  • Anyone! However, children under 14 will need adult supervision.

What’s in it for you?

  • Become proficient in one or more tree-related skills and receive formal certification for each skill set.
  • Contribute to the size and quality of North County Coastal’s urban forest.
  • Be a part of a team who supports environmental sustainability and human health.
  • Engage in exciting, meaningful, fun tasks with like-minded adults and youth.
  • Get mild, healthy exercise.
  • Plant for future generations.
