Noise Reduction

Aside from the obvious of loud noises causing sleep interruption, noise can cause anxiety, tension, or even illness. Prolonged exposure to high levels of noise can cause hearing loss.

Noise is considered  a form of environmental pollution. Due to some of these concerns there is a noise curfew for Lindbergh Field and with few exceptions departures are allowed only between 6:30 am and 11:30 pm.

Trees can be a factor in reducing noise.

  • Although wide belts of trees in a urban setting are unlikely, there is a 7db noise reduction (about 50%) per 100 feet of forest due to trees by reflecting and absorbing sound energy (solid walls decrease sound by 15 db) (according to the USDA National Agroforestry Center).
  • Trees provide “white noise”, the noise of the leaves and branches in the wind and associated natural sounds, that masks other man-caused sounds.
