Join Tree San Diego’s Annual Plant-A-Thon

Tree San Diego’s Plant-A-Thon is an annual, pay-it-forward community event that brings people together each spring and fall to plant and distribute thousands of trees across San Diego County. Each season, volunteers, local leaders, partners, and environmental champions unite to transform streets, schools, parks, and neighborhoods through hands-on tree planting and free tree distributions. Together, we’re growing shade, improving air quality, cooling our communities, and investing in a healthier, more resilient future for generations to come.

A Pay-It-Forward Planting Movement

Tree San Diego's Plant-A-Thon is more than a single event; it’s a movement. Trees planted or received through this initiative are passed forward in impact: cooling homes, improving health outcomes, supporting biodiversity, and building shade equity in historically underserved communities.

Each season features:

• Large-scale community planting days

• Free tree distributions for residents

• Volunteer-powered neighborhood greening

• Partnerships with cities, schools, and community organizations

• Focus on heat-vulnerable and low-canopy areas

What to expect:

• Help us plant and distribute climate-resilient trees to increase shade and expand the urban canopy

• Connect with local leaders and community organizations at tabling booths

• Visit interactive booths hosted by environmental groups and community partners

• Get your hands dirty for a good cause - and go home knowing you made a difference!​

What to bring:

• Closed-toe shoes

• Comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting dirty

• Reusable water bottle (we’ll have refill stations!)

• Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, etc.)​​​​
