CCAC Fellows in the Field: Golden Volunteer Events

Two of Tree San Diego's California Climate Action Corps Fellows brought their communities together this June for a pair of unforgettable volunteer events.

Amari Henry: The Sound of Soil at WorldBeat Center

June 20, 2026 · Tijuana River Valley Garden Farm

CCAC Fellow Amari Henry partnered with the WorldBeat Center to host The Sound of Soil — a community stewardship event unlike any other. Volunteers gathered at the WorldBeat Center's Tijuana River Valley Garden Farm for a morning of hands-on environmental service, supporting a community farm that provides fresh produce to families in need. Together, they harvested zucchini, laid compost, and planted watermelon seedlings to support the garden's succession planting cycle.

But the highlight of the morning was something truly one-of-a-kind. Specialized equipment set up by Benerice of the WorldBeat Center allowed volunteers to actually listen to the vibrations of microorganisms living in healthy soil — an ecoacoustics demonstration that brought the invisible world beneath our feet to life. It was a powerful reminder that healthy ecosystems start from the ground up. Thank you to the WorldBeat Center and every volunteer who showed up to care for the land and strengthen the community.

Olivia Heifetz: Tree Maintenance Day at El Toyon Park

June 27, 2026 · National City

CCAC Fellow Olivia Heifetz brought volunteers together at El Toyon Park in National City for a morning of tree maintenance—mulching 35 Pink Trumpet Trees that had been planted just last October as part of Tree San Diego's Plant-a-Thon. Seeing how much they'd grown in just a few months made the work that much more rewarding.

Once the mulching was done, ISA Certified Arborist Kurt led the group on a mini Tree Trek through the park, where volunteers encountered Canary Island Pines, Jacarandas, and Tipu trees—a living reminder of just how much urban biodiversity surrounds us every day.

Thank you to Olivia and every volunteer who gave their Saturday morning to keep National City's trees thriving.
